The Best Fall Things to Do in Oakville & Burlington This October

There’s something about October in Oakville and Burlington that makes you want to get outside.

The trees are changing, the air is cooler, and Thanksgiving weekend is almost here. From waterfront walks and colourful hiking trails to pumpkin displays, farmers’ markets and ghost walks, there are plenty of fall things to do in Oakville and Burlington this month.

Whether you’re looking for a family outing, a quiet walk or something a little spooky, here are some ideas worth adding to your October calendar.

Take a Fall Walk Through Lions Valley Park

Lions Valley Park is one of Oakville’s best spots to enjoy the changing leaves.

The park follows Sixteen Mile Creek and offers wooded trails, valley views and plenty of fall colour. It feels surprisingly removed from the city, despite being right in Oakville.

It’s a great choice for a morning walk, a family outing or simply an excuse to get outside before the colder weather arrives.

Fall weekends can get busy, so heading out earlier in the day is a good idea. Visit Oakville

Spend an Afternoon at Bronte Creek

Sitting right between Oakville and Burlington, Bronte Creek Provincial Park is an easy choice for a fall day outdoors.

There are several trails through the park, along with open spaces and the historic Spruce Lane Farmhouse area.

Visit Oakville specifically recommends Bronte Creek for enjoying the changing fall leaves. The park’s combination of forest, trails and farm setting makes it especially nice at this time of year. Visit Oakville

Pack some comfortable shoes, bring a coffee and make an afternoon of it.

Walk the Oakville Waterfront

Fall doesn’t have to mean heading into the woods.

Oakville’s waterfront is beautiful at this time of year too.

A walk through Downtown Oakville can easily be combined with Lakeside Park and the waterfront. Or head west toward Kerr Village and Tannery Park for views of Oakville Harbour and the lighthouse.

Another option is Gairloch Gardens in southeast Oakville. The lakefront setting makes it a peaceful place for a shorter fall walk.

Finish with a coffee or lunch downtown and you’ve got a pretty easy October afternoon.

Explore Burlington’s Waterfront

Burlington has its own great fall waterfront option.

Spencer Smith Park gives you a long waterfront promenade, open views of Lake Ontario and easy access to Downtown Burlington.

It’s a good option when you want to get outside without committing to a full hike.

You can walk along the lake, head out toward the pier and then stop downtown for coffee, lunch or dinner.

Discover Burlington is highlighting waterfront walks alongside its escarpment and wooded trails as some of the best ways to enjoy the city this fall. Discover Burlington

See the Fall Colours From the Escarpment

If you want something more adventurous, head north in Burlington.

Mount Nemo Conservation Area offers wooded trails and impressive Niagara Escarpment lookouts. Fall is one of the best times to visit because of the surrounding colour.

Another option is Kerncliff Park – Ian Reid Side Trail, where trails wind through a former quarry area, forest and wetlands.

Both can get busy during peak fall colour season, particularly on weekends. Plan ahead and check current admission or parking requirements before leaving home.

Visit the Great Pumpkin Trail

Here’s one for the October calendar.

The Great Pumpkin Trail returns to Hendrie Park at Royal Botanical Gardens from October 15–18 and October 23–25.

The evening trail features thousands of glowing pumpkins and creative displays throughout the gardens.

Tickets are required, and this is one I’d plan ahead for rather than leaving until the last minute. Discover Burlington

Shop a Local Farmers’ Market

October is also a great time to pick up seasonal produce and support local vendors.

The Burlington Centre Lions Farmers’ Market continues on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays through October 24, according to Discover Burlington. Discover Burlington

And later in the month, Oakville has something a little different.

The Bronte Farmers’ Market: Haunts & Harvest Edition takes place October 25. Visit Oakville says the Halloween-inspired market will feature more than 40 local vendors, live music, seasonal favourites and family-friendly activities. Visit Oakville

It’s a nice way to combine shopping local with a fall outing.

Take a Ghost Walk Through Old Oakville

October wouldn’t be complete without at least one spooky option.

The Oakville Historical Society’s Ghost Walks run October 13–30, excluding Sundays.

The guided walks take you through historic Old Oakville while sharing stories from the town’s past.

Visit Oakville lists walks at 6:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., with advance booking recommended. Visit Oakville

Even if you’ve lived in Oakville for years, this could be a fun way to see a familiar part of town differently.

Make a Thanksgiving Weekend Out of It

Thanksgiving weekend doesn’t need an elaborate plan.

A morning walk through the fall colours, a stop at the waterfront and lunch at a local restaurant can make for a great day close to home.

If family or friends are visiting from out of town, show them the places that make this area special.

Take them through Downtown Oakville or Bronte Village. Walk the Burlington waterfront. Head to one of the trails. Then finish the day somewhere local for dinner.

Sometimes the best weekends are the ones where you don’t have to drive very far.

Save Something for a Rainy Day

Of course, October weather doesn’t always cooperate.

Oakville’s World of Threads Festival is running through January 17, 2027 at the Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre. The international festival features textile and fibre artwork from more than 190 artists. Visit Oakville

It’s a good indoor option if the forecast ruins your outdoor plans.

Oakville and Burlington also have plenty of local shops, cafés, galleries and entertainment to turn a rainy afternoon into an outing.

Make the Most of Fall Close to Home

You don’t have to travel far to have a great fall weekend.

Some of the best fall things to do in Oakville and Burlington are right in our own backyard. We have the lake, the Niagara Escarpment, beautiful trails, historic downtowns and plenty of local events to choose from.

And that’s one of the things I love about living in this part of Halton. There’s always somewhere to go, but you don’t necessarily have to go very far.

So grab a coffee, put on a sweater and enjoy October while the colours last.

Happy Thanksgiving from our team to you and your family!
